The Scene

Three events. Two days. Three venues that each carried a few hundred years of history behind them. The mehndi at Forte de Cruz — a castle off the Atlantic coast, all color and open sky and sunset over the water. The nikkah the next morning at Penha Longa Resort, on the grounds of Convento da Penha Longa — a monastery dating back to the 14th century, in the hills of Sintra — white, quiet, overcast in the best way. The reception that evening at Vandelli Botanical Garden, where the peacocks were also in attendance. Portugal wasn't just a backdrop. It was the whole point.

Behind the Lens

One of the first destination weddings I got to document, and everything about it matched the couple. Sulva and Umair are quiet people. Their love doesn't ask for attention. The design team flew in two weeks ahead to source every piece of decor on-location — flea markets and consignment shops throughout Lisbon — and somehow every hand-painted curtain and hand-picked centerpiece ended up exactly right. But the couple seemed most at peace just being there, in that country, with the people they love. The decor had its story and they had theirs, and both were worth following. Fujifilm and mobile content alongside the main team. Every frame on the Fuji was a choice.

The Color

The decor was hand-sourced across Lisbon over two weeks. Every centerpiece hand-picked, every curtain hand-painted. It was saturated, warm, and made for that sunset.

The Fog

Sintra the next morning — the grounds of a 14th-century monastery, overcast sky, everything white. It looked exactly like what it was: a nikkah in the hills of Portugal.

The Garden

Vandelli at dusk. Wildlife roaming, florals everywhere, the week's energy landing softly. Cake decorating over cake cutting. They put their own touches on all of it.
